Beautiful Madonna of Krużlowa
Wooden church in Krużlowa Wyżna

The Beautiful Madonna of Krużlowa is a Gothic sculpture made of linden wood that was discovered in the parish church in Krużlowa Wyżna in 1889 by Władysław Łuszczkiewicz and Stanisław Wyspiański . In 1899 it was acquired by the National Museum in Krakow .

The sculpture belongs to the soft style of late Gothic art, and is an example of the "Beautiful Madonnas". It was created at the beginning of the 15th century. The wood sculptor remains unknown.

The figure is 119 cm high. It is designed to be viewed from three sides; the back is deeply hollowed out to prevent the wood from cracking. It depicts Mary with the naked baby Jesus holding an apple. Madonna is standing in contraposto , her clothes are lavishly folded.

It is believed that the figure of the Madonna was intended for one of Kraków's churches and that it was not replaced by Baroque sculptures in Krużlowa until the 17th century. The first written record dates from 1607, the next from 1766. The figure originally stood in the high altar, was later moved to the vestibule, and finally kept in the attic because of bark beetle infestation.

The wooden sculpture was in poor condition, often thickly painted with oil paint and scraped off. In Krakow it was first exhibited in the Cloth Hall , and since 1924 in the Town Hall Tower. In 1940 it was confiscated by the German authorities and placed in Hans Frank's cabinet .

Since October 2007 it has been part of the collections of the Erasmus Ciołek Bishops' Palace in Kraków . Coordinates: 49 ° 39 ′ 6.2 ″  N , 20 ° 53 ′ 0.6 ″  E
