history

The pedunculate oak at the lower end of the market square on the corner of Rathausberg street has been protected since November 24, 1958 , according to an information board attached to the tree by the Aue-Schwarzenberg district in 1999 and is now a natural monument. According to the information provided by the district on this sign, the oak was planted as a heraldic tree around 1750, was around 22 meters high in 1999, had a crown diameter of around 17 meters and a trunk circumference of 3.11 meters. The trunk size has increased since the notice board was put up. In May 2017 it was 3.46 m.
Its predecessor tree was planted in 1643 according to the same information. There is no evidence that this was a deliberate planting as a heraldic tree. Until 1838 the first cemetery of the village was located in this area, so that the tree could also have been planted in or on the edge of the cemetery as an ornament. According to sheet 196 of the Sächsische Meilenblätter (Berlin copy) from 1792, the oak can be located in the area of the eastern border of the cemetery at that time.

Schönheide coat of arms

At its meeting on May 5, 1997, the Schönheider municipal council decided on a coat of arms with this description:

In silver over a black dot and in front of two diagonally crossed black mountain hammers and a black hoe a rooted green oak, each side accompanied by a green heather plant with a red flower on each side.

The coat of arms is based on a "court sigil to Schönheyd" used in 1643 and takes over its coat of arms motifs. The author Ernst Flath rediscovered this court seal around 1900 when he was collecting material on the history of Schönheide. He published a copy of this seal in his publication Heimatkunde und Geschichte von Schönheide, Schönheiderhammer and Neuheide . According to Flath, the oak was a “Schönheider landmark”, mallets and iron are reminiscent of mining from the founding time in the mid-16th century to the 19th century, the hoe indicates the clearing of the forest for settlement and the heather plants take hold Name of the community. The origin and meaning of the black point under the oak are unclear. It can already be found on the seal from 1643.

The community of Schönheide did not use their coat of arms in GDR times, but instead put a round stamp under the letter, in which the coat of arms of the GDR with a wreath of ears around a hammer and circle was depicted in the middle . In the brochure on the history of the Schönheide community published by the community in 1987 on the occasion of the 450th anniversary of the beginning of the settlement , the coat of arms of the GDR is not found. On the cover picture she used the old Schönheider coat of arms in a uniform green color, omitting the black point under the oak.
