Advantages over other drives

Outboards can only be attached to hull shapes with a transom , with cutter-shaped hulls only the option of a built-in motor or the mounting of the outboard in a bunker remains.

Heavy outboards that are attached to the transom of a boat also shift the center of gravity significantly to the rear and can therefore impair the sailing properties of sailboats. This can be avoided with an engine bay because the engine is closer to the center of gravity of the boat's construction.
