Shalander

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Schalander is the room in a brewery where the workers change and stay during their breaks. Sometimes the taproom or beer tasting room of a brewery is also called this today.

The word probably originally comes from the Latin cala 'protected place' and used to describe the accommodation of the guild-like brewers and maltsters . However, the final origin is not clear.

According to other sources, the origin lies in the medieval Kaland , a brotherhood that met on the first day of each month. From the 17th century the word was also used as calendering for “feast and drink”.
