The Hebrew term shalom ? / i [שלום] (English spelling: shalom, in Ashkenazi pronunciation also Schulem or Scholem ) initially means integrity and salvation . But the term not only means liberation from every calamity and misfortune, but also health, welfare, security, peace and tranquility, and it is one of the most common greetings in Israel . Shalom is already a central word in the Tanakh and therefore the usual greeting among Jews . It is also used as a goodbye. The word is based on the root š - l - m , which is meaningful in the Semitic language area, and is closely related to the Arabic Salām .

The name of King Solomon goes back to the same root.
