Derailleur hanger

Dropout with derailleur hanger

The hanger is the attachment point for the rear derailleur of a derailleur on the bicycle. It is located on the right, rear dropout of the bicycle frame and has an internal thread that accepts the fastening bolt of the rear derailleur. This screw connection typically has a fine thread of the dimensions M10 x 1.0 and thus the same thread dimensions as the hollow axles of standard rear wheel hubs .

Changeable construction

Rear derailleur on an exchangeable derailleur hanger

On modern, lightweight bicycle frames, the derailleur hanger on the aluminum dropout is usually designed as a replaceable component. In the event of damage (e.g. by falling or falling), the frame and rear derailleur are protected from damage by only bending or breaking the replaceable derailleur hanger - this can be replaced easily and inexpensively. Such a replaceable derailleur hanger is mounted with one to three screws on the rear right dropout and is also clamped with the quick release of the rear wheel.

Changeable derailleur hanger

The manufacturers of bicycle frames have developed hundreds of different interchangeable derailleur hangers for different bicycle models. Due to the variety of models, there are always procurement difficulties with such derailleur hangers.

Integrated construction

The derailleur hanger is usually an integral part of the dropout on bicycle frames made of steel . Because of its higher rigidity compared to aluminum, steel will mostly only bend and not break in the event of damage.

In order to correctly recognize the deformation of a derailleur hanger and make it usable again, there are special directional swing arms as a tool.

On bicycles without derailleur gears, an existing derailleur hanger can be used to mount a chain tensioner .

For bicycle frames without derailleur hanger, derailleur adapters are available that have a corresponding hole with M10x1.0 thread and enable the assembly of a derailleur.

No derailleur hanger is required for hub gears .
