Shammua

Shammua is the name of three men in the Old Testament .

etymology

The name appears in the Masoretic text mainly in the spelling שַׁמּוּעַ šammûa ' ( Num 13.4  EU , Neh 11.17  EU , 12.18 EU ), but in 1 Chr 9.16  EU the same name carrier is used as in Neh 11.17 שְׁמַעְיָה called šəma'jāh . This is explained by the fact that the name Shammua is a short form of the name Schemaya . Schemaja is a verb sentence name consisting of a verb and a subject. The verb with the root שׁמע šm ' means “to hear”, the subject is the theophore element יָה jāh ( YHWH ). The name therefore means "YHWH has heard". The short form Schammua then arises from the waste of the theophoric element. It means "(God) has heard". An interpretation of the name as a passive participle (“the one heard by God”) does not seem to come into question, since intransitive verbs also form short forms of the same form, from which no passive meaning can be derived. A particularly large number of personal names can be derived from the root שׁמע šm ' , such as the long forms Schemaja, Elischama, Ishmael / Ismael , Ismaja, as well as the short forms Schammua, Schama, Schema, Schimat, Schimon / Simeon , Schimi , Schima, Schamma, Shammai, Shammot.

The fact that the name Shammua is a short form is ultimately supported by the writing in the Septuagint . In Num 13.4 the name Σαλαμιηλ salamiēl is written. Here ηλ ēl is the Hebrew אֵל 'el ("El / God"). In 1 Chr 9,16 stands Σαμια Samia , where ια ia represents the Hebrew יָה jāh (YHWH). The Septuagint thus preserves the long form of the name in both places.

Shammua, son of Sakkurs

In Num 14  EU , Moses is assigned by YHWH to send out spies to explore the land of Canaan , one from each tribe. Shammua, the son of Sakkurs, is sent for the Ruben tribe ( Num 13.4  EU ).

Shammua, Levite

In 1 Chr 9,16  EU and Neh 11,17  EU Shammua is a Levite , father Abdas, son of Galal and grandson of Jedutun.

Shammua, priest

In Neh 12,18  EU , a priest named Shammua from the Bilga's family is named as head of his family in the time of Jehoiakim .
