Scheme
Schemaja is the name of 28 people in the Old Testament .
etymology
The Hebrew personal name Schemaja has been handed down in two different spellings: שְׁמַעְיָה šəma'jāh andשְׁמַעְיָהוּ šəma'jāhû . It is a verb sentence name, consisting of subject and predicate. Subject (and at the same time theophoric element) is a form of " YHWH " (יָהוּ jāhû orיָה jāh ), the predicate derives from the verb root שׁמע šm ' , German for' to hear ' . The name can be translated as "YHWH has heard". The Septuagint gives the name as Σαμαια Samaia , the Vulgate as Semeia .
Schemaya the Prophet
Schemaja is a prophet whose ministry falls during the time of Rehoboam , the first king of Judah after the division of the empire. He is entitled "Man of God". He warned Rehoboam not to go to war against the northern Reich of Israel, since its inhabitants were brothers. Rehoboam then refrains from the campaign ( 1 Kings 12 : 21–24 EU ).
In addition, 2 Chr 12 EU reports that when Pharaoh Shishak I marched against Jerusalem, Shemaya saw the impending calamity as a punishment for apostasy. Thereupon Rehoboam was converted, whereupon God had Shemaya proclaim that because of repentance the disaster would be averted, but a high tribute was to be paid to the Pharaoh. According to 2 Chr 12.15 EU , Schemaya was also a historian. Together with the seer Iddo, he recorded the story of Rehoboam.
