Shame
A shameful cloak , also called a shameful barrel and a Spanish cloak , was a punitive instrument from the 13th century. The coats made of wood, which were sometimes lined with sheet metal on the inside , were used to carry out penalties . Those punished with it were often guilty of forest crime or prostitution . Anyone who got killed could be insulted, slapped and pelted with rubbish. So it was like the blasphemies .
The shame barrel partially contained weights at the lower edge and at the neck opening to increase the agony of the delinquent, but this was not fatal.
In the 19th century, the shameful cloak was misinterpreted as an instrument of killing: As the so-called " iron maiden ", executioners with shameful cloaks are said to have carried out executions . In addition, the shame coats were provided with thorns on the inside. As the legal historian Wolfgang Schild ( University of Bielefeld ) was able to prove, such iron maidens were showpieces assembled from museum finds.
