Shanghai ( Russian Шанхай ) was a rock group that emerged in 1988 in the Soviet Union from the band Nautilus .
history
Yevgeni Margulis , who founded Nautilus together with Sergei Kawagoe , has not been allowed to perform publicly in the Soviet Union since 1982. In order not to endanger the performance and production opportunities of the group, Margulis therefore withdrew. Without him as the driving force and musical head, the group quickly disintegrated. Margulis was given the opportunity, as a member of Yuri Antonov's backing band , Aerobus , to circumvent the official performance ban. With the inauguration of Michael Gorbachev and the beginning of perestroika, the performance opportunities for Soviet rock musicians changed radically, so that Margulis and Kawagoe revived Nautilus . During the 1985 tour, however, the similarity of the name with the group Nautilus Pompilius became increasingly a problem, so that the reincarnation of Nautilus was short-lived.
Margulis oriented herself more and more to the blues . He therefore rebuilt the cast of Nautilus accordingly, ultimately only he and Dmitri Rybakov remained from the original cast . The group began in 1988 with a tour of the crumbling Soviet Union. In the meantime, however, Soviet rock music was heavily influenced by heavy metal , which also met the taste of the audience at the time. For Shanghai there was no commercial or artistic success, so that Margulis finally broke up the band in 1989 and initially devoted himself to solo projects.
Despite their short lifespan, some productions in Shanghai enjoy great popularity, such as the Shanghai Blues, Письма (German: "Briefe"), Дороги наши разошлись (German: "Our ways parted") and До свиданья, друг (German: " Briefe") Goodbye, friend ”).
