The Schapel (also: Schäpel , Schappil , Schappelin ) is a tire-shaped headdress for men and women made of metal or flowers that appeared in the 12th century .
Originally a wreath-shaped flower arrangement for virgins during the spring dances, the Schapel was later made of metal and consisted of gold-plated or silver imitations of flowers, often set with precious stones or pearls . Schapel were mostly worn in connection with the giver , veils or hairnets . They were in use until the beginning of the 16th century.
