Sustainable Churches ( "Sustainable Churches ") is one of the UNESCO excellent program of Catholic and Protestant institutions in Germany, by which these long can test their economy up to one year.

The project is based on the principles of environmental management in accordance with the European EMAS ( Eco Management and Audit Scheme ) standard and on the CSR ( Corporate Social Responsibility ) concept developed by the European Commission . Both demand an ecologically exemplary handling of resources such as water, electricity, gasoline and heating oil. With "Sustainable Churches" there are also social and economic criteria.

The EU LIFE program and the German Federal Environment Foundation support “Sustainable Churches”; the contact point for environment and development eV (KATE) coordinates the project.
