Schardeich is a dike that is located directly on the river or the sea without being protected by foreland. This means that special protection is required for the dike foot facing the water.

The Schardeiche have been built with a flat embankment since the 18th century and "embroidered" straw at their base. The straw was replaced by stones towards the end of the 18th century, today the dike feet are mostly protected by asphalt.
