Himped

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A Himpten (also Himten , Himt ) was until the mid- 19th century in use Hohlraummaß for grain . In Lower Saxony, the measure was also referred to as Hempe, Hempte and Himpe. Hemethe was a written form. It was usually equivalent to half a bushel , or about 30  liters .
Sometimes it was also used as a measure of the area of arable land, here a Himpten field was the area that could be sown with a Himpten grain.

Measure of capacity

The cavity was a himp:

  • 27.445 liters in Lauenburg,
  • 27,481 liters in Hamburg,
  • 31.14477 liters in Braunschweig,
    • Braunschweig: 1 Himten / Ratshimten = 1570.083 Parisian cubic inches = 31.14477 liters
    • Braunschweig: 40 Himten or 40 Ratshimten = 1 Wispel
    • Braunschweig 21 Ratshimten = 20 Randhimten (formerly)
  • 31,152 liters in Hanover,
  • 32.969 liters in Schaumburg-Lippe,
  • 34,780 liters in Schleswig-Holstein,
  • 40.185 liters in Kassel.

The dimensional chain was - different from the above. Relationship - e.g. B. in Hamburg for the goods wheat , rye and peas

  • 1 bushel = 2 barrels = 4 himps = 16 lockers = 64 measure = 128 small measure

for barley and oats one even calculated

  • 1 bushel = 6 himpten = 24 lockers = 96 measure = 192 small measure

The locker was very different from region to region (from 4 4/9 liters in Bremen to 21 2/5 liters in the Duchy of Holstein ), so that the Himpten also showed different values.

Weight measure

The Himpten was only very indirect as a measure of weight. It was known, for example, that a Himpten weighed rye approx. 21.5 kg, wheat approx. 13.4 kg, barley approx. 18.7 kg and oats approx. 13.6 kg.

Area measure

The Himpten was often half an acre , around 25  ares .
