Schattenspiel is a compilation album by the band Lacrimosa . It was released on May 7, 2010 on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the band and collects old and previously unreleased material on two CDs.

concept

Lacrimosa was founded in 1990 by Tilo Wolff as a solo project and during this time it changed from a representative of the new German death art through symphonic metal to a symphonic rock band. To celebrate the twentieth anniversary, Tilo Wolff decided against a best-of album because he wanted to deliver something exclusive to his fans. So he collected unpublished material from the band's 20 years of history. Wolff makes it a point to mention that the pieces are "100 percent Lacrimosa, but never found the right medium to be published". The songs are in chronological order on the album and are commented on in detail in the 32-page booklet .

The name of the album has several components. On the one hand, he refers to the title "Shadowplay" by the band Joy Division , which had a great influence on Lacrimosa's artistic work. On the other hand, it relates to the songs themselves, which were virtually overshadowed by the Lacrimosa repertoire because, unlike the other songs, they were not published. A third association arises from the Lacrimosa story, which always included a theatrical component.

The songs come from the entire history of the band, only the years 1995 to 2002 are excluded, as the songs written at that time formed a concept and were all published.

Song info

The album begins with the two songs Seele in Not and Requiem , which so far could only be found on the demo tape Clamor , which is limited to 100 copies .

Guilt and Atonement was the fourth song that Wolff wrote for Lacrimosa. In contrast to the rest of the band's output, a harder EBM number, the text of which is based on the novel of the same name by Fyodor Michailowitsch Dostojewski . Spin is instrumental .

The extended version of Copycat , which was recorded with an orchestra, was originally intended as a single , but disappeared in the archives. Only when the album was being made did Wolff remember the version that was only put on the album at the last minute. So the title was taken as the 18th number on the album, which happened against the protest of the distribution partners. They had already announced the album with 17th titles and had to change their promotional campaign.

Mantiquor did not end up on the Lichtgestalt album because it was too bad in Wolff's opinion. It was only when he was putting together the compilation album that he recognized the qualities of the piece.

Sellador and Without You Everything Is Nothing were written exclusively for the album. Sellador is a fantasy name derived from the English word "cellar door" for "cellar door". The song contains much more electronic elements than is usual with Lacrimosa, because Wolff wanted to build a bridge to the early days.

The US version was published by Scarecrow records and also contains a “Club Mix” by Sellador .
