After her first fight against Strigoi, which resulted in the death of the two Strigoi, the Dhampiress Rose Hathaway is haunted by dark visions. Although she has not yet got over the death of her boyfriend Mason, she has to find her way back into Academy life. There is a trial for the novices, during which they have to protect their Moroi. Contrary to the expectation that Rose will be assigned to Vasilisa Dragomir, her best friend and the last successor of the Dragomir family, she has to work with Christian Ozera, the boyfriend of her best friend Vasilisa, during the exam. Meanwhile, Rosemarie learns from Dimitri Belikov, her teacher and her secret love that the trial of Victor Dashkov is about to take place, in which she is allowed to participate with Lissa despite initial obstacles. Victor is ultimately found guilty.

Back at the Academy, Rose and Dimitri profess their love. Shortly thereafter, the school is attacked by Strigoi , the undead vampires and enemies of the Moroi and Dhampires. With the help of Christian, Rose has fought successfully, but they must move on to another fight as some Damphire and Moroi have been kidnapped. On the second mission, which takes place in a cave, Dimitri does not make it out. Rose believes Dimitri was killed, but he was turned into a Strigoi. Since Dimitri had said some time ago that he would rather be killed than live his life as a Strigoi, Rose leaves the Academy alone and sets off for Siberia to find and kill Dimitri.
