Schedëur

Schedëur is in the Old Testament in the Book of Numbers the father of Elizur from the tribe of Ruben .

etymology

The Hebrew name שְׁדֵיאוּר šədê'ûr is a nominal sentence name. The subject is the theophore element שַׁדַּי šaddaj , the second part of the name is formed by the noun אוּר 'ûr "light". The name means "Shaddai (is) light". The Septuagint gives the name as Σεδιουρ Sediur .

The divine name שַׁדַּי šaddaj Schaddai appears in the Hebrew Bible in conjunction with אֵל 'el "El / God" in Gen 17.1  EU , 35.11 EU , 48.3 EU and Ex 6.3  EU . This corresponds to the conception of the priestly scripture, which names the god of creation Elohim and that of the patriarchs Shaddai , until the correct name of God YHWH is first revealed to Moses on the thorn bush ( Ex 3.14  EU ). This designation of God also appears in the mouths of Balaam ( Num 24.4  EU .16 EU ) and Job ( Hi 8.5  EU , 11.7 EU , 13.3 EU , 15.25 EU , 22.26 EU , Hi 27.10  EU f. EU , 31.2 EU , 33.4 EU , 40.2 EU ), as well as singular in the Ezekiel book ( Ez 10.5  EU ).

According to the logic of the priestly scriptures, personal names that contained the divine name YHWH could only be given after the revelation of this name. Therefore, such a name could only be borne by someone who was born after the events described in Ex 3. Since Schedëur's son in Num 1.5  EU is selected to assist with the drafting, it must be assumed that Schedëur himself was older, which is why the author of the priestly script did not choose YHWH but Schaddai as the theophoric element for his name . Comparable are the names Zurischaddai (צוּרִישַׁדָּי ṣûrîšaddāj "rock (is) Schaddai", Num 1.6  EU ) and Ammishaddai (עַמִּישַׁדָּי 'ammîšaddāj "father brother (is) Schaddai", Num 1.12  EU ), which are recorded in the same generation , as well as the name Hosea (הֹושֵׁעַ hôšea ' ) documented in Num 13.6  EU for the person of Joshua .

In connection with the fact that Shaddai as theophoric element in personal names is not documented in inscriptions, this speaks against the assumption that the name bearer is a historical person.

Biblical narration

In NumEU , YHWH instructs Moses to determine the total number of Israelites and all those capable of military service. The head of an extended family from each tribe, which YHWH determines in each case, should help him. This is said to be for the tribe of Ruben Elizur, the son of Schedëur ( Num 1.5  EU ). This is referred to as the tribal leader (נָשִׂיא nāśî ' , Num 2,10  EU , 7.30 EU ) and in addition in Num 7.35  EU when the offerings for the dedication of the altar of the Tent of Revelation are handed over , as well as in Num 10.18  EU mentioned when the Israelites set out from Sinai , each with the name of the father.
