Sheikh Barakat

Sheikh Barakat ( kurmanji Şêx Barakat , Arabic أبي البركات بن سحر DMG Abī ʿl-Barakāt ibn Sahr , born in Bait Fār near Baalbek in Lebanon , died in Lalish in Iraq ) was the second leader of the Adawiyya order as successor to Sheikh Adi . He worked at the end of the 12th century and is considered a holy personality in the Yazidis' faith .

Life

Sheikh Barakat was the son of Sheikh Adi's brother Sheikh Sahr and thus the nephew of Sheikh Adis. He was appointed as his successor by Sheikh Adi on his deathbed. After Sheikh Barakat's death he was buried next to Sheikh Adi in Lalish.

Sheikh Barakat's successor was his son ʿAdī ibn Abī ʿl-Barakāt (the father of Hasan ibn Adi and the grandfather of Sharaf ad-Din ).

Adoration by the Yazidis

Sheikh Barakat spent many years in the Lalisch Valley and the Yazidis worship him for his teachings and sacred deeds. With Sheikh Barakat's position as the successor to his uncle Sheikh Adi, the number of disciples and pilgrims within the Adawiyya order increased steadily, the order flourished in its time.
