Shekanda

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Shekanda was a Nubian king who ruled Makuria around 1276 .

Shekanda is mainly known from Arabic sources. He was placed on the throne by the Egyptians after King David was expelled from Makuria. Shekanda was a sister son of David. The Egyptians forced him to pay particularly high tributes. Accordingly, he delivered three elephants, three giraffes, five female leopards and 400 oxen to the Sultan annually. Parts of Makuria were subordinated to the Sultan. Shekanda could not stay on the throne long. In 1279 a new ruler of Makuria is attested.
