Scherzschein is the name for more or less obviously false banknotes that appear similar in color and format to banknotes or resemble circulating notes in design or color.

Such false notes are sometimes printed specifically for collectors, but mostly used for commercial, advertising or propaganda purposes.

A well-known example of their use is in board games such as Monopoly .
