The Scheuer Prize for Marine Biotechnologists and Materials Research has been awarded by the Academy of Non-Profit Sciences in Erfurt since 2004 for outstanding scientific achievements in the field of molecular and traditional drug research and materials research.

The award is named after the scientist Paul J. Scheuer (1915 Heilbronn - 2002 Hawaii), who had to emigrate from Germany to the USA in 1938. Scheuer received his PhD in organic chemistry from Harvard University and was Professor in the Department of Chemistry at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, Honolulu in 1950. Among his more than 300 publications, the book “Chemistry of Marine Natural Compounds” (1973) stands out with which Paul J. Scheuer became the founder of modern marine molecular and chemical biotechnology.

The Paul J. Scheuer Prize is awarded every four years by the Academy of Charitable Sciences in Erfurt. The donor of the award is the collecting society of the national excellence center BIOTEC marin, the NanotecMARIN GmbH. The excellence center BIOTEC marin was founded on September 1st, 2001 by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (Berlin). The aim of this scientific association is to ensure the high level of research in the field of molecular and traditional biotechnology and marine drug research in Germany. The focus is on the sustainable use of marine resources to provide bioactive substances (secondary metabolites), which are obtained specifically from "lower" marine animals by bundling the activities of leading zoologists, chemists, microbiologists, molecular biologists, engineers and bioprocess technicians. The center focuses its work on the sponges (Porifera) and sponge-associated microorganisms. The vision of the center is to recombinantly obtain the active ingredients and especially the biomaterials from sponges.
