Gerhard Bringmann

Gerhard Bringmann (born August 26, 1951 in Münster ) is a German chemist. He is professor for organic chemistry at the University of Würzburg . He is particularly concerned with natural product chemistry .

From 1970 Bringmann studied chemistry (and biology) at the University of Gießen and the University of Münster (Diploma 1975) and received his doctorate in 1978 under Burchard Franck in Münster. As a post-doctoral student , he was with Derek HR Barton at the Research Center for Natural Product Chemistry in Gif-sur-Yvette near Paris. In 1984 he completed his habilitation in Münster and in 1987 became a professor in Würzburg (he had previously turned down an offer to Vienna).

He deals with the isolation, structure elucidation, biosynthesis and synthesis of natural substances from plants, including pharmaceutically important substances against malaria .

In 2006 he received the Adolf Windaus Medal and in 2007 the Scheuer Prize . He has three honorary doctorates and has good contacts in Africa (especially the Congo ). He was visiting professor in Beijing and at Jinan University.
