Lake Zug shipping
The shipping company for the Zugersee AG (SGZ) operates licensed shipping on the Zugersee under the name of Zugersee Schifffahrt . The fleet consists of the four motor ships Zug , Rigi , Schwyz and Schwan . The shipping company for the Zugersee AG is a partner company of the Zugerland Verkehrsbetriebe AG .
history
The first steamship company for Lake Zug was founded relatively late. A company for Lake Geneva was founded as early as 1823 ; By the end of the 1840s, steam shipping had started on various Swiss lakes, including in 1836/1837 also on Lake Lucerne, a few kilometers from Lake Zug . According to Hermann Stadlin-Graf (1947), "the desire to introduce steam shipping had been lively for years" in Zug, but the idea could only be pursued gradually due to the "smallness of the situation". The first company was founded on November 6, 1851. She ordered a paddle steamer from Escher Wyss in Zurich . The ship Rigi was launched on May 3, 1852 , and operations began on June 14, 1852. The increasing tourist traffic to the Rigi led to the desire for a second ship , especially in Arth . Another steamship company was founded there on May 23, 1863, but it merged with the existing company in the same year. The second, larger steamship was also supplied by Escher Wyss, was named Stadt Zug and began operating on July 1, 1864. In 1875 the newly opened Arth-Rigi-Bahn wanted to set up its own shipping service across Lake Zug for its passengers in Arth, and for this purpose ordered a saloon steamer from Escher Wyss. In the end, however, an agreement was reached with the Dampfschifffahrt-Gesellschaft, through which the new steamer Helvetia could be acquired by the Dampfschifffahrt-Gesellschaft, which received a subsidy from the Arth-Rigi Railway and the right to transport coal. The Arth-Rigi-Bahn had a say in the design of the timetable. The agreement was to apply until the Gotthard Railway opened .
In 1884 it was decided to liquidate the company, although the financial situation was good and the competition from the Gotthard Railway was not viewed as threatening the existence of the company. The official justification for this was that the shareholders had not approved the use of the reserves for the repair of the ships; Hermann Stadlin-Graf, however, regards this as a pretext in his paper on the history of shipping on Lake Zug, since the buyer of the steamers, the inventory and the property at the subsequent auction was the incumbent president of the company, who apparently was the front man for the United Steamship Company on the Vierwaldstättersee (VDGV, from 1885 DGV).
The DGV operated shipping on Lake Zug until 1896, when the branch was discontinued with a view to opening the continuation from Zug to Goldau of the Thalwil – Arth-Goldau railway line . The Helvetia was transported to Lake Lucerne, where it was rebuilt as Winkelried .
In 1897 the steamship company for Lake Zug was founded . The Zugerland Verkehrsbetriebe ZVB took over the management in 1949. In 1960 the company was renamed Schifffahrtsgesellschaft für den Zugersee AG (SGZ). It still operates under this name today.
