The sentry, calling into the rifle by Carl Schindler , 1839

Schildwache (Middle High German: Schiltwache ( -waht (e) ), Schildwacht, Posten , French Sentinelle, Factionnaire), actually the guard standing in front of each guard in front of the rifle, who formerly had to guard the shields and weapons hung here ; in the broader sense, every single item posted in garrison and camp service.

The sentinels are inviolable because they represent the authority of the state and can use their weapons against anyone who assaults them or who defies their orders, if they have no other means of enforcing obedience. A sentry guard may never let go of the weapon, move further from the post than is expressly ordered, talk to anyone, do not sit down, eat, drink, accept presents or with anyone unless required by duty so on.
