history
The monastery school, originally founded in 1133, was able to be financed from the church funds released when the monastery transferred to the Reformation in 1576 as the first school in Hamelin. As early as 1540, under the influence of the Reformation, Bernhard Lüder, a Protestant rector, had been appointed to the monastery school. Due to various disputes, however, there were sometimes major problems that could not be resolved even through repeated reform attempts and regulations.
Only under the rector Justus Leo, appointed in 1741, was it possible to bring some order into the situation. In 1848 a law decreed the repeal of the Hamelin Foundation , which was responsible for the school finances up to this point, so that the financing of the school system had to be regulated differently. At this point the school already had the status of a boys' school. In this, according to a curriculum that was supposed to convey the beginnings of a grammar school, teaching was mainly part-time by clergy or private individuals.
Later, more and more special, carefully selected teachers were hired and new curricula developed, so that around 1831 the school could be described as a Progymnasium. In 1867 this was then converted into a grammar school and thus into a "first-class learned school" and was opened as such on May 10, 1867.
The first director was August Ebeling, followed by Gustav Regel (1814–1894) from 1868 to 1884. In 1876 the grammar school had 354 students, 136 of whom were foreign grammar school students, who prove the important role of the school and Hameln as a school town for the surrounding area. In 1897 a new high school building was moved into on Gröninger Strasse. In the years 1908 to 1910, the mayor Wilhelm Sauerwein endeavored to add a secondary school to the grammar school. In 1910 it taught 639 pupils, 318 of them from outside Germany. In 1922, under the rector Paul Brügmann, the transition from the reform high school to the reform real high school was initiated. In 1930 the school had 512 students.
On September 25, 1947, the school was renamed Schiller School (Council resolution of September 18, 1947). On March 8, 1957, the name was renamed again by decree of the Lower Saxony MK in Schiller-Gymnasium.
Since 2005, a full-day program with support programs, working groups and help with homework has been offered for the lower grades. For the higher grades there are various working groups in the areas of football, handball, music, chess and the Internet, which are widely used. In addition, a branch office was opened in 2005 in an old administration building, which is located 500 meters from the main building, where the classrooms for grade 10 are located.
In 2006, the former "butcher's house", which is practically in the school yard, was expanded and renamed "Schiller's Villa"; it is used as an additional building for classrooms and offices.
Since November 6, 2006 there is the "Schiller Radio", the school radio of the Schiller-Gymnasium.
The new cafeteria was inaugurated in autumn 2009.
In 2015/16 part of the central wing was demolished and rebuilt in a modernized manner. The historic facade was not allowed to be damaged. Partly bare stone walls can now be seen in the rooms of the renewed wing.
In 2017 the Schiller-Gymnasium celebrated its 150th anniversary as a grammar school and 1050 years of school history in Hameln.
