A shield antenna is a transmission antenna that consists of a self-radiating transmission mast isolated from earth , from the top of which wires are either stretched to other masts, which can also be earthed, or to anchor foundations, these wires being conductively connected to the transmission mast and insulated at the anchoring points are hung. The wires cause an electrical extension of the transmission mast through their capacity with the earth.

Shield antennas are an early antenna design and were mainly built for long wave and long wave , as it is often not possible to erect a transmission mast with the necessary height for these frequencies .
