Umbrella drawer

The safe of a community or the guardianship authority is called an umbrella drawer . The term is little known and is most likely still used in Switzerland, particularly in connection with the deposit of ward assets; see. Section 65 EG ZGB ZH: "If necessary, the child's assets are to be placed in the umbrella drawer to secure the supply costs." In earlier times, these assets were kept in a special chest that was secured by several locks. The umbrella drawer could only be opened if all responsible persons were present with their keys.

In literary terms , the term umbrella drawer can be found in The Green Heinrich von Gottfried Keller , Part Three , Chapter 9 The Little Parchment :

“The drawer in which the securities of those under guardianship were kept was already there for other business, and the authorities said it was best to take the item out now; so hopefully one will be relieved of this matter forever.
The wooden box with three locks was placed on the table and opened by the chairman, the bag master and the clerk each pulling a key out of his pocket, inserting it into the corresponding hole and slowly turning it. "

In Switzerland, the umbrella drawer is regulated in the cantonal introductory laws to the civil code. B. in § 102 ff. EG ZGB ZH: “Each guardianship authority, under the supervision of the district council, ensures a suitable umbrella drawer. The umbrella drawer should be housed in a secure, fire-proof vault or fire-proof cabinet and be provided with at least two locks. The two keys should be in the hands of two members or of one member and the clerk of the guardianship authority. Two key holders have to help open the umbrella drawer, and a log is to be kept of the inputs and outputs at the same time. "
