The battle on Mount Gaurus was fought between the Romans and the Samnites during the First Samnite War . It probably took place in 342 BC. Chr. Instead. The Gaurus Mons is today's Monte Barbaro near Cumae , immediately west of Naples .
The Romans were led by Marcus Valerius Corvus and remained victorious in the costly battle over the Samnites. Carthage is said to have congratulated the winners and given Rome a golden crown for the temple of Jupiter.
