In the battle of Mykale in the strait between the Ionian foothills of Mykale and the island of Samos , the disembarked crews of the Greek and Persian fleets surrendered in 479 BC. During the Persian Wars a battle that took place around the same time as the Battle of Plataiai .

The Spartan King Leotychidas II and the Athenian general Xanthippos triumphed over the Persians .
