Leotychidas II

Leotychidas ( Doric Latychidas ; Greek  Λεωτυχίδας ; * around 545 BC; † around 466 BC / 469 BC in Tegea ) was a king of Sparta from the family of the Eurypontids . After the deposition of Damaratus , with whom he was enemies, he climbed in 491 BC. The throne and ruled until about 476. At the same time with him ruled the Agiade Leonidas I. Because of his involvement in the actions of Cleomenes against Aegina he was accused by the Aeginetes after the death of his fellow king.

He commanded in the Persian War of 479 BC. The Greek fleet in the amphibious battle at Mykale . The Athenian naval commander Xanthippos , the father of Pericles , was subordinate to him. Around 476 he was sent on an expiatory campaign against the Persian-minded Aleuads in Thessaly . He returned with nothing achieved, which the outsider historian Herodotus could only explain through bribery. He was charged on his return to Sparta and fled to Tegea before being punished, where he died a few years later.
