The Battle of Oak Grove , also known as the Battle of Frenchs Field or Kings School House , was the first battle of the Seven Day Battle of the Civil War and took place on June 25, 1862.
Major General George B. McClellan attacked along Williamsburg Road with the III. Corps of Union Forces under Major General Samuel P. Heintzelman . He wanted to position his siege artillery on a small plateau so that he could bombard Richmond . The Union attack was carried over marshy terrain and repulsed repeatedly by Major General Benjamin Huger's Confederate division. At nightfall the III. Corps achieved a gain of space of 600 meters. During the night the fighting stopped and everyone went back to their original positions.
The next day, General Lee took the initiative and attacked Beaver Dam Creek.
