The Battle of the Zab ( Arabic معركة الزاب, DMG Maʿrakat az-Zāb ) took place on January 16, 750 between the Abbasids and the Umayyads on the Great Zab River in northern Iraq . The last resistance of the Umayyads (of Damascus) under their caliph Marwan II was broken by the Abbasids under as-Saffah . The result was a change in the dynasty of the caliphs . The Abbasids founded the second caliph dynasty. The first capital of the Arab Empire of the Abbasid dynasty (750–1258) was al-Anbar in northern Iraq, in 762 it became Baghdad .
