The Battle of Chełm took place on June 8, 1794 in a suburb of the city of Chełm between the Polish and Russian forces during the Kościuszko Uprising .

On June 8, the united associations of the Russian Generals Petrowicz Zagriażski and Wilhelm Derfelden with an army of 16,500 soldiers and 24 cannons met the Polish troops under General Józef Zajączek with only 6,000 regular soldiers, 14 cannons and over 2,000 peasant soldiers with war scythes .

Zajączek occupied the wooded hills 1.5 km from the town. In the morning the Russian troops started the attack. After several hours of fighting, the severely inferior Polish lines collapsed under the attacks.

Zajączek could only try to save as large parts of the army as possible by retreating.
