The Battle of Pleasant Hill was a battle of the American Civil War . It took place on April 9, 1864.
After the defeat in the Battle of Mansfield the previous day, the 13,000 men of the Union troops under Major General Nathaniel Prentiss Banks moved to a position south of the town of Pleasant Hill in Louisiana . Banks occupied a hill facing north and awaited the attack of the pursuing 12,500 Confederates under Major General Richard Taylor .
At 4 p.m. Taylor attacked the right flank of Union forces with cavalry , while three infantry divisions attacked the left flank and center. The attack by the Confederate infantry was pushed back to the place. Banks ordered the reserve to be used against the advancing right Confederate wing and pushed them back until nightfall.
Despite his victory, Banks dodged to Grand Encore, where the Union fleet was on the Red River. Bank's evasion after winning the battle ended the Union's Red River campaign.
The Confederates lost 1626 men, the Union 1369.
