Battle for Arnhem

The Battle of Arnhem took place as part of Operation Market Garden between September 17 and 27, 1944. The remnants of the British forces that were supposed to conquer the bridge from Arnhem over the Nederrijn were ultimately evacuated by the Allies in Operation Berlin .

The events were dealt with in the book The Bridge of Arnhem (1974) by Cornelius Ryan and in the film The Bridge of Arnhem (1977), directed by Richard Attenborough .

The dead of the 1st Airborne Division are particularly buried in the Arnhem Oosterbeek War Cemetery in Oosterbeek . The Airborne Museum Hartenstein commemorates the fighting.
