Battle of the Marshall Islands
The Battle of the Marshall Islands took place from January 31, 1944 as part of the Pacific War and ended with the conquest of the Marshall Islands by American troops.
The Americans divided the conquest of the archipelago into three independent operations (for detailed information on the course of the battle, see there):
- Operation Flintlock (January 31 - February 3, 1944) Attack on the Kwajalein Atoll
- Operation Hailstone (February 17 - February 18, 1944) Air raid on the important Japanese base Truk in the Caroline Islands
- Operation Catchpole (February 17 - February 23, 1944) Attack on Eniwetok Atoll
After the fighting ended, the Marshall Islands were used as naval and air bases for a variety of operations, as suggested by the idea of island hopping .
