The Battle of Gallipoli was fought in 1312 between the Byzantine Empire and the allied Serbian Kingdom against the Turkopolans under Halil Pasha.
The Turks had plundered and devastated the surrounding area in the run-up to the battle. For two years, Thrace was in the hands of Halil Pasha, which made it impossible for the local population to cultivate their land during this time. Michael IX. raised an army and drove the Turks to the Gallipoli peninsula. Two thousand Serbian horsemen of King Stefan Uroš II Milutin came to his aid while the Genoese fleet blocked the Turks from the sea. Halil and his Turks were massacred in the ensuing battle. Some Turkopolies returned to Byzantine services after the battle.
