Castelo de Guimarães

The Battle of São Mamede took place on June 24, 1128 near Guimarães (in São Mamede de Este) in northern Portugal . Afonso Henriques' troops faced the armies of his mother, Theresia of León , who was in a relationship with the Count of Galicia, Ferdinand Perez de Traba. Theresa of León, heiress of the county of Portugal, became dependent on her lover and became the enemy of her son Afonso Henriques, as both wanted to gain control over all of Portugal.

The battle ended with the victory of Afonso Henriques and his supporters from the Portuguese nobility, and Afonso Henriques was crowned King of Portugal in 1139 after the Battle of Ourique . Among his colleagues in São Mamede are the Archbishop of Braga Paio Mendes and Egas Moniz .

Chronicon Lusitanum

The Latin work Chronicon Lusitanum reports (with a free German translation):

Æra 1166 [...] Siquidem mortuo patre suo Comite Domino Henrico, cum adhuc ipse puer esset duorum, aut trium annorum, quidam indigni & alienigenae vendicabant Regnum Portugallis, matre ejus Regina Donna Tarasia eis consentiente, volens fie ipsa superbe su regnare loco , amoto filio a negotio Regni. Obtinuit ipse principatum & Monarchiam Regni Portugallis.

1128. When his father, Count Heinrich, died when he [Afonso Henriques] was only two or three years old, with the consent of his mother, Queen Dona Teresa, who took the place of her husband and son in the Wanted to take over the affairs of the empire, some unworthy foreigners [led by Fernando Pérez de Traba] entered the Kingdom of Portugal. Since he [Afonso] could never endure such a dishonorable injury, he invited (when he was already grown and well built) his friends and the nobler men of Portugal, who preferred his rule to that of his mother or the ignoble foreigners, who wanted to kidnap him and he met them fighting in the battle of São Mamede, which is next to the castle of Guimarães, and they were fought and defeated by him, and they escaped from his sight and he seized them. He received the government and kingship of the Kingdom of Portugal.
