The naval battle of Vuelta de Obligado took place on November 20, 1845 on the Paraná River , between the Argentine Confederation under the command of Juan Manuel de Rosas and a joint British-French fleet. The dispute was part of the Anglo-French blockade of the Río de la Plata. Although the attackers were able to break through the Argentine naval defenses and overrun the land defenses, the naval battle proved that foreign ships can only enter Argentine waters under danger. The battle also increased support in South America for Rosas and his government.
