The memorial commemorates the Scottish inventor James Watt (1736–1819). It was created in 1832 based on a design by the British sculptor Francis Leggatt Chantrey .
The Statue of James Watt occupies a prominent position on the southwest corner of George Square in central Glasgow. The equestrian monument of Prince Albert and the statue of Sir John Moore are adjacent . The statue rests on an elliptical pedestal of granite with elongated plinth . The bronze sculpture shows James Watt seated. In his lap is a map that he is working on with a circle.
