Slag mill

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The slag mill was a municipal sawmill in front of the Johannistor in Wernigerode , which emerged from a medieval ironworks in the 14th century .

The slag mill was first mentioned in 1311 as Scapes hutte . Ore from Goslar was smelted here, just outside the city of Wernigerode. As early as 1397, the ironworks was used as a municipal sawmill, as it is called Bartoldes Schapeshütten (alias de Sagemolen) in the documents . The mill was on a ditch between the Holtemme and the slag pond, with whose water it was operated. The name of the pond was Schauwensdyk in the 15th century , later Slaggendik . In the course of the industrial revolution in the first half of the 19th century, the slag mill came to a standstill and was later demolished.
