Blow (animal breeding)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Beats are sub-units of races that differ from one another only in a few traits or genes. Like races, they are delineated according to subjective judgment. The difference between breed and loft is fluid and is pragmatically defined by existing standards. In the case of domestic chickens in particular , the genetic difference between the colors of one breed can be higher than between the same color of different breeds due to the crossing of different breeds.

Even smaller units can form mating or real communities of descent, which are differentiated as clans .

Shades of color

Within a standardized breed, different colors and drawings of the skin, fur or plumage are divided into color variations. The number of color varieties per breed varies greatly: over 100 color varieties are known of the budgie, the 210 breeds of large chickens standardized in Europe have an average of 5.4 different color varieties, while the 74 goose breeds recognized in Europe only have an average of 1.5 color varieties per breed .

Strikes outside of standardized races

The general term “beat” is also used for animals that can be classified according to specific and fixed characteristics. An example is the Brazilian Singer Chicken , which is characterized by an extended crow call, but occurs in many color and drawing variants through crossings with other chickens. Another example is found with the Icelandic land-grabbing chicken , which offers a wide range of colors and is only given a common name because of its geographical origin.
