Marans is the name of a large breed of chicken that was bred in France around the town of Marans . Their breeding can be traced back to the middle of the 19th century. The breed has been recognized in Germany since 1979.

description

Marans are very lively, lively and somewhat shy animals, some can also develop a slightly combative character. In addition to the physique and plumage, care is also taken to ensure that the eggs are as dark as possible in breeding. The laying output is around 180 to 200 eggs per year. The minimum weight for hatching eggs is 65 g. The rooster weighs 3.5–4 kg and the hen 2.5–3 kg.

The English breed of marans have no feathers on their legs. With the dwarf marans, there is also a breed of bantam that is looked after by the same special association. The cocks can be recognized by the cartilage on the leg.

Eggs

Maran's eggs

A characteristic of this breed of chicken are the dark brown to light brown eggs , which can be covered with dark spots. With age, usually after a year, the eggs of the Marans lose their dark brown color, they are then light brown with a few slightly darker spots. However, this only applies to the respective laying period. With the start of the next, the eggs are again as dark as they were at the beginning. Another special feature of these eggs is their very thick shell, which delays the evaporation of the liquid and the penetration of germs and bacteria. As a result, they can not only be stored for a long time, but are also suitable for hatching after several months.

Colors (gallery)

In Germany, the breed is mainly bred in copper-black and gold sparrowhawks, more rarely in silver sparrowhawks. Since 2011, the colors black-silver and blue-copper have also been recognized by the Association of German Poultry Breeders . In France there are additional colors.
