According to the legend of its origin, the Snake Bone Pagoda was built to commemorate the fatal battle between the young hero Duan Chicheng and a giant python devouring people and animals . The pagoda is said to be made of bricks made from a mixture of the bones of this snake and baked clay.

The Fotu Temple pagoda has been on the list of monuments of the People's Republic of China (6-740) since 2006 .
