The Schlankloris ( Loris ) are a primate genus from the family of the Loris (Lorisidae) among the wet-nosed monkeys . Today a distinction is made between two types, the red and the gray slender lory .
features
Schlankloris are small, graceful primates. They reach a head body length of 18 to 26 centimeters, there is no tail. Their weight is 0.1 to 0.3 kilograms. Their fur is reddish, brown or gray on the upper side, the belly is lighter, often light gray or whitish. The limbs are very thin, the second fingers of the paws have receded. The head is characterized by the large, round eyes, which are surrounded by red-brown fields. The ears are rounded and hairless on the edge.
distribution and habitat
Slender Lorikeets are native to eastern and southern India and the island of Sri Lanka . Their habitat is forests, whereby they can occur in different forest forms, but prefer to inhabit areas with dense undergrowth.
Way of life
These primates are nocturnal tree dwellers. Their movements are slow and deliberate, thanks to their modified paws they have a firm grip on the branches that can hardly be loosened. They are more social than the other Loris, they sometimes sleep in groups and sometimes interact while foraging for food at night.
Their diet consists mainly of insects. To a lesser extent, they also consume small vertebrates and plant matter.
The male reproduces with the females, whose territories overlap with his. A young animal is usually born after around 170 days of gestation. This is weaned after six to seven months and sexually mature at ten months. Life expectancy in human care is over 15 years.
Systematics
There are two types:
- The red slender lory ( Loris tardigradus ) is endemic to Sri Lanka and has a reddish or reddish brown fur. Due to the destruction of its habitat, according to the Red List of Endangered Species of the International Union for Conservation of Nature ( IUCN ), it is endangered ( endangered ), the total population is estimated at less than 2500 adults.
- The gray slender lory ( Loris lydekkerianus ) is the much more common species and differs mainly in its gray-brown fur color. The species lives in India and in the north and east of Sri Lanka. It is also included in the IUCN Red List, but rated as Least Concern .
