Schlegel House (2012)

The Schlegel-Haus is an office building in downtown Bochum , opposite the town hall. It was built in 1930 as the administration building of Schlegel-Scharpenseel-Brauerei AG by the Bochum architect Heinrich Schmiedeknecht .

history

Schmiedeknecht's five-storey building with a height of 22.5 meters with a protruding side elevation and a street front of 38 meters was, according to the unanimous opinion of the local press, the representative highlight of the expansion of the brewery, which at the time was one of the largest in Germany. The Bochumer Anzeiger declared it to be a "model example of a new, factual building method", the Generalanzeiger praised its positive urban development effect on the Bochum town hall square. Because of the cramped location in downtown Bochum, further fermentation tanks were built in the newly built deep cellars of the administration building 14m below street level to expand the existing storage cellars, which are still preserved today. The Schlegel administration building was badly damaged by bombs during the war. For the German Catholic Day in 1949, the three lower floors were rebuilt and temporarily used as a hotel. After the merger with the Dortmunder Union Brewery and the relocation of brewing activities to Dortmund in 1983 , the brewery site was sold to the state development company NRW , which had most of the brewery demolished and built residential buildings on the site. But the administration building was preserved. It was acquired by the Logos Group in 1998 and renovated while largely retaining the historical appearance. Today it is used by companies in the creative industries under the name “Schlegel-Haus” . An increase to the former height of five floors is planned to provide space for a city hotel with 183 rooms. The first basement is now used as a place for exhibitions and other events. In 2017, scenes from a film were shot in the Schlegel Catacombs.
