Lock Frensdorfer Haar

Frensdorfer Haar border lock

The lock Frensdorfer Haar , also known as the “border lock ”, was put into service in 1905. It is located on the Nordhorn-Almelo Canal and is therefore part of the left-Emsian canal network . It is the only lock on the German side. Since the water level of the canal on the Nordhorn side corresponds to that of the Vechte and therefore varies, the lock is provided with a double pair of stem gates on both sides . This means that the water level on the east side can be kept higher or lower. It also prevents the water from flowing back and forth in the canal. Because parts of the canal on the Dutch side were filled in after the canal was closed in 1965, the lock is no longer functional and the water is the same on both sides. The lock is 62 m long and the maximum passage width is 6.50 meters. Due to the oval shape, two barges could be funneled at the same time.

In its original state, there was a wooden plank bridge above the lock entrance in the northeast. This was replaced by a reinforced concrete slab after the Second World War. Due to severe damage, the maximum crossing weight was recently reduced to three tons.

In 2003 and 2004 the entire lock system was renovated, funded by the European Union through the program for the development of typical landscapes and rural areas (ETLR) . Today the lock is maintained by the Lower Saxony State Office for Water Management and Coastal Protection (NLWK) and is a protected monument.
