Allenbach Castle

The Allenbach Castle is an Outbound lowland castle and later chateau in the local church Allenbach in the municipality Herrnstein in Rhineland-Palatinate .

history

Sponheim's Ellenbach Castle , first mentioned in 1265 , stood in place of the castle . This castle was encircled by the Hohlbach and had a round about five feet wide dungeon . From the end of the 15th century, the complex was rebuilt several times, with the defensive structures still dominating until 1585.

The fact that the castle was not destroyed after the invasion of the French revolutionary troops is thanks to the last Allenbacher hut owner Johann Mathias Sauermilch . At the time, sour milk lived in the castle and set up a line weaving mill there. In 1898 the castle was sold to Max Purper for 5500 Marks, who received the exterior facade but decisively redesigned the interior. For five years he restored the palace under the direction of the Frankfurt architects Müller and Rummel and renewed the attic, windows, doors, floors, plaster and plaster. The system has had a water connection since 1906, and electricity has been available since 1920.

The building is now a listed building . Since the restoration by Max Purper, Allenbach Castle has been in family and private ownership, but opens its doors to visitors on the occasion of guided tours and events.

building

The building is a late Gothic two-storey residential building in quarry stone masonry with a half-timbered core and individual weir elements. The polygonal stair tower on the front is striking . In the period between 1528 and 1601 the castle was built using old parts of the castle.

In a drawing by a Kurtrier geometer around 1585, an irregularly structured building can be seen on an area of approx. 700 m² with a central round tower. There was a cistern in the courtyard. The current gate was a drawbridge with an underlying prison. When it was uncovered by Max Purper, it was discovered that there was once a circumferential, 30 m long and 10 m wide moat. The foundations of the castle as well as the cistern and parts of the outer walls have been preserved in the inner courtyard. Besides Gemünden Castle, it is the only castle in the Hunsrück that can be lived in .
