Alswangen Castle

The Alswangen Castle ( Latvian Alsungas viduslaiku pils ) is located near Alsunga (Baltic German: Alswangen, Alschwangen) in historic Courland in the west of Latvia . The place was first mentioned in the contract of the Pope with Alna Balduin concerning the cures

Under order master Wilhelm von Freimersen a stone order castle of the Livonian order was built in 1373 . The castle was designed as an economic castle and had a mill to grind the grain tithe on the spot. Later the castle was reinforced with two cannon towers, diagonally opposite each other.

During the time of the Duchy of Courland from 1573 to 1728, the castle belonged to the von Schwerin family . In 1623, the owner, Count Johann Ulrich von Schwerin, married the Catholic Barbara Konarska and brought Catholicism to Alswangen. As a result of the missionary work of the Jesuits who were called to the region by Johann Ulrich von Schwerin , part of the population turned to the Catholic faith, whose descendants now live as a Catholic minority of the Suiti in and around Alswangen.

In 1738 Alswangen came into the possession of the Dukes of the Duchy of Courland and Zemgale. Since then, the facility has been the administrative center of the Alswangen estate . In 1741 the castle was a castle in Baroque remodeled style.

After the palace complex was nationalized in 1920, a dairy was established there in 1925 . In 1939 the second floor was extended and the building was converted to house the local school.
