The Bernau Castle , also known as Water Castle Pärnu known located in the municipality Fischlham in Wels-Land district .

History of the castle

The first mention of Pernau concerned a previous building from 1189, which was ascribed to a Timo de pernowe . The Pernauer lived here until the 15th century. In 1405, Joachim Pernauer sold his seat to Wolfgang Anlageer zu Köppach. In 1449 the brothers Wolfgang and Hans Jörger Pernau inherited the castle from the followers. The Oberhaimer bought the residence from the Jörgern and converted it into a moated castle. In 1616 the castle belonged to Sigmund Jagenreuter, who sold the castle back to Sigmund Spindler von Hofegg. In 1730 Leopold von Eyselsberg acquired Pernau Castle from Veit Jakob Spindler and had it rebuilt in the Baroque style. The master builder was Wolf Grinzenberger von Wels. From 1766 to 1793 the fork koven was owned by the estate, but Count Alois Spindler was able to buy back the castle in 1793. In 1798 Carl Annacher bought the property from him. From 1810 Wolfgang and Franziska Tiefentaler were the owners. In 1907 the castle and estate came to Julius Theuer. The castle was sold by his heirs to the Hatschek family from Vöcklabruck .

Castle construction

The three-storey and almost square castle stands on a high plinth on a conglomerate rock. This saved the castle from water damage. Access is built on pilots. Round towers protrude from the four corners. In addition, wide supporting pillars are attached, which give the outer walls rising out of the water the appropriate support. A brick bridge leads over the moat to the gate. The rooms on the ground floor are accessible from a central corridor, a spiral staircase leads to the upper floors, there is no inner courtyard.

Opposite the castle is the associated four-winged Meierhof. An archway leads under a square gate tower to the Meierhof. There are baroque putti in the courtyard. The castle now also includes the “Schloss Bernau” guest house, which offers overnight accommodation.

present

The Handlbauer family acquired the castle in 1979 and had it renovated in style over the next few years. From 1993 to 1997 the artist Anton Krajnc redesigned the former palace chapel in the right corner tower in memory of Doris, the daughter of Herbert and Gerhild Handlbauer who died young. The interiors were extensively renovated from 1998 with a view to meaningful use.

The castle is available for concerts, cultural and scientific conferences, readings and exhibitions, as well as for celebrations (weddings, birthdays, balls, etc.).

In 2007 the lords of the castle received the monument preservation award of the state of Upper Austria.
